$106 Million Fund Launched To Tackle Asia’s Ocean Plastics Problem
The world's first investment fund dedicated to combatting Asia's plastic crisis has been set up. The Circulate Capital Ocean Fund will be financing waste management, recycling and circular economy companies in South and South-East Asia.
Although the region is the biggest source of plastic leakage into our oceans, governments have started introducing investment programmes and initiatives to start tackling the problem. Singapore has already introduced multiple initiatives, such as the Zero Waste Masterplan and a Resource Sustainability Bill.

Ingesting microplastics can impact the growth of fish
New research, published in Limnology & Oceanography Letters, has shown that a fish's growth can actually be stunted by ingesting microplastics.
The researchers have explained that reduced growth in their early life could mean that the amount of time in the larval stage and therefore the risk of attack from other species is increased.
Thailand begins 2020 with plastic bag ban at major stores
Thailand has banned plastic bags in around 25,000 stores as part of a 20-year plan to reduce plastic use. Last year, the country was able to reduce the use of plastic bags by 2 billion, just by encouraging shoppers to refuse the bags.
The plan is also focusing on the use of microbeads and will soon be rolled out to include plastic straws and cups as well.
